The Story So Far, A Potted History

Our History

Established in Cornwall in April 1989 we started as a scuba diving centre, quickly becoming a PADI 5 Star scuba diving and scuba training centre which quickly established itself as West Cornwall’s premier diver training centre. Business began with a RIB – Little Deeper – loads of enthusiasm - loads of dive gear – nowhere to keep it.

  • 1989 October - moved to our first proper dive centre and retail premises in St. Ives – wow, loads of space.

  • 1990 October - how did we manage to fill the space so quickly?

  • 1991 - continued to build solid core of regular UK scuba divers – needed more space.

  • 1992 - an excellent year in St. Ives but now bursting at the seams – four instructors working flat out throughout the summer.

  • 1993 - more beginners than ever before - looking for a new premises – need more space.

  • 1994 - moved to superb new premises in Canon’s Town between Penzance and St Ives, in Cornwall. We’d found our utopia, or so we thought, own pool, offering accommodation for students and beautiful grounds. But unfortunately were presented with a serious planning headache culminating after planning appeal and public enquiry, with us having to look for new premises. In the same year we also opened a unit on Long Rock Industrial Estate, Penzance, Cornwall for scuba equipment sales and to house the compressor.

  • 1995 - toward the end of the year we found new premises. Another, much larger unit on Long Rock. This year also saw the arrival of a new boat – Little Deeper’s ‘sister’ - Little Deeper II - enabling us to carry more divers and comfortably cope with difficult weather conditions around the Cornwall coastline.

  • 1996 - Opening early that year having moved the whole operation into Unit 15a – where we spent several years, loads of space!

  • 1998 - Our 'new' premises now bursting at the seams, how did we fill it so quickly?

  • 1999 - We introduced GUL wetsuits to our product range, and expanded further with many other top watersports brands incl Crewsaver, Bodyglove, Typhoon products.

  • 2001 June - saw the culmination of three years of work and planning (and frustration) when we opened 'Undersea Adventures Red Sea' in Hurghada, Egypt.

  • 2002 March 9th - was the launch date for our new, online shop with a wide range of products to purchase directly from the site.

  • 2003 - massive expansion in the range of products on our website, now struggling to cope with more space urgently needed.

  • 2004 - after 14 years of operating the scuba diving and training side, we decided it was time to switch the emphasis, by far the largest part of the business is now the online shop, so we decided to 'contract' out the scuba diving and scuba training side of the business.

  • 2005 June - still growing, at last a move to our superb new premises in Hayle, Cornwall, 3 months later than planned, but glad to have managed the move, now we really have loads of space!2005 August - where oh where did all that space go? We've filled the floor already, at least we have the height to go upwards in this building! 2005 September - Undersea Adventures Ltd gains 'Highly Commended' in the E-Commerce Awards 2005, South West Region. We were very pleased to receive the award in the 'Best Sales and Marketing Online' category for WatersportsWarehouse.co.uk. The presentation was held Wednesday 21st. September at the very impressive HP Labs, Bristol. And we enjoyed the champagne – Thank you.

  • 2005-2006 - During all the moving and expansion we also developed our own line of Snorkelling Equipment - Reefwear Masks, Reefwear Snorkels, Reefwear Fins and even a Reefwear Snorkelling and General Purpose Buoyancy Aid

  • 2006 - Adding to our snorkelling range and working in conjunction with a local Cornish surf brand we designed and launched our first Reefwear wetsuit collection with Junior Wetsuits for Spring Summer - a range of Full suits and Shorties for general waterports use 2006 - later that same year we also spread our Reefwear wetsuit range to Adult suits for Spring Summer and a range for Winter

  • 2008 July - Wow – we are now in the roof – well almost. We’ve increased our storage and despatch facility and taken on more staff to help with our growing online and IT needs, our retail shop requirements and warehousing. Our shop continues to attract visitors from far and wide as we appeal to an ever increasing customer base here in Cornwall, throughout the UK and from Europe.

  • 2009-2010 - Saw the expansion of our Reefwear range of wetsuits and Reefwear Snorkelling gear we've been able to stay one step ahead of the competition by providing superb dive quality masks and snorkels at superb prices to appeal to the holidaying and 'have-a-go' snorkeller from complete beginner through to Freediving level.

  • 2011 - By continually adapting our business we've developed a huge product range and are able to offer the best selection of watersports equipment from our base in West Cornwall - our aim has always been the same. This could be a tough year for all retailers but we simply keep doing what we've done for the last 20 plus years, we don't stand still, provide excellent customer service supported by a solid base of Watersports brands, and have a wealth of knowledge and experience to aid customers buy the right product and at a competitive price. Our success has been due to the dedication of our team to continually maintain a standard of service and quality of scuba training other diving establishments could only admire. Our advice is often sought by non-divers and divers alike for our ‘insider’ knowledge of the coastal region around Cornwall – everything from the best places to go snorkelling and boarding to providing neoprene to decorate a surgical bandage !! The service previously provided in the scuba diving business is now carried through to our online business with 97.5% of orders being despatched on time (same day weekdays) and 98% of our stock lines in stock at any one time, so we are able to despatch orders as soon as they hit our computer screens, figures hard to beat but as always, our aim is to do better. We would like to thank all our customers both regular and new.

When Is My Credit Card Debited?

Your card will normally be debited when the goods are packed for dispatch. An authorisation takes place when you place your order. This simply guarantees that the funds are available on your card and that payment will be made to us. This authorisation remains valid for ten days. When the goods are dispatched, we will debit funds from your account overnight directly into our own.

If certain items in your order are out of stock or unobtainable we will only partially debit your card order. We are also able to cancel or refund individual items of your order should this become necessary.

What Happens If My Card Authorisation Fails?

If the authorisation fails, the most likely explanation is that you have input your card details incorrectly. If this happens, press the back button on your browser and you will be returned to the card input page. Check that all the details are correct, and make any changes necessary before proceeding.

If all the details are correct and you still fail to get an authorisation then we advise that you contact your card issuer to establish why your card was not authorised. We will receive your order anyway and may contact you to arrange for alternative methods of payment.

What Risks Are Involved In Buying Online?

All personal data, including your card number is transmitted over secure connections, meaning that no-one can 'eavesdrop' and capture your details. In addition to this, your card details are not viewable by us at all, they are simply transmitted over the bank's private X25 network for authorisation and payment transactions.

You are protected because the transaction was carried out as 'Cardholder not present.' This means that any payments will be refunded to your card should it be used fraudulently by someone else or you do not receive what you ordered.

When Will My Order Be Despatched And How Will I Know?

Orders received by us Monday to Friday by 3:30pm WILL NORMALLY BE DESPATCHED THE SAME DAY. We're sorry but we do not have Royal Mail/carrier collections over a weekend or on Bank Holidays so your order would be despatched on the following normal working day. During busy periods priority will be given to UPGRADED orders.

If your order includes an item which is not available from stock - as indicated on the product item/page prior to adding an item to your basket - your order will be held until that item is available.  Your order is therefore despatched once complete and all items are available for despatch in one parcel.

Orders received after 3:30pm and by 4pm we will try our best to despatch the same day, but due to volume of business we can't guarantee this.

Orders received after 3:30pm Friday and by 3:30pm Monday, which includes  orders placed on Saturday & Sunday, will be despatched next working day ie: Monday.

Orders placed during a Bank Holiday (Good Friday/any Bank Holiday Mondays) will normally be despatched next working day ie: Tuesday

If you have provided the correct e-mail address on your order you will receive an e-mail to confirm despatch (toward the end of the despatch day). If you do not receive our email, it may be in your spam folder or you may have submitted your e-mail address incorrectly on your order.

What If I Would Like To Amend My Order?

We will always try to accommodate any amendments to your order received by e-mail or by phone prior to 3:30pm (Mon-Fri), after which time we may not be able to make any adjustments to your order. However, do please ask as we will always try, although depending on the time of day and operational processes this may delay the despatch of your order. Naturally once an order has left us we are unable to make any amendments.

We are not able to amend a delivery address of any order once the order has been despatched. For orders despatched by carrier service, you are able to track the delivery information for your parcel via the despatch confirmation e-mailed to you. However, you should be aware that any delivery address amendments/instructions may affect the delivery timescale of your order.  We would also ask you to carefully check your address details throughout the check-out process.  There are 3 separate opportunities to review the information you have entered before completing a purchase.  This helps to minimise address errors and reduce possible charges should a parcel be returned to us.

Do I Need To Sign For My Parcel To Confirm Receipt?

Upgraded orders and orders over £100 goods value will normally be sent using a signed for service and will require a signature on delivery to confirm safe receipt. It is advisable to have your order delivered to an address where someone is usually available to receive the parcel during normal working hours. This will help the delivery services ensure you receive your order quickly and efficiently.

If you know you will not be available to receive the parcel you may add instructions in the Instructions section of your order form eg: leave with a neighbour. We would not advise any parcels are 'left safe'.

IMPORTANT: If your parcel is damaged or open on receipt, you must sign for the parcel as "received damaged" or "received open" and notify us within 2 working days.

When will I receive my order?

Orders which have not been upgraded we would normally expect to be received within 5 working days after placing your order. We do all we possibly can to ensure orders are despatched promptly but can not be held responsible for failures within the delivering services.

UPGRADED orders are sent on a next working day delivery service and for this reason it is advisable to have your order delivered to wherever you will be during normal working hours as it will require a signature to confirm safe receipt. Once an order is despatched it is in the hands of the various delivery services, either Carrier or Royal Mail to deliver according to the service we use.

If your order is 'TIME CRITICAL' you have the option to UPGRADE the delivery service for your order at the time of ordering. In times of high demand on the delivery services eg: Christmas - please don't leave it too late to place your order.

We do all we possibly can to ensure orders are despatched promptly but can not be held responsible for failures within the delivery services. As delivery services are outside our control we are unable to provide any delivery guarantees.

We, therefore, can not accept any responsibility or consequential loss resulting from late/failed delivery as this is entirely outside of our control.

If your order includes an item which is not available from stock - as indicated on the product item/page prior to adding an item to your basket - your order will be held until that item is available.  Your order is therefore despatched once complete and all items are available for despatch in one parcel.

What if there is something missing from my delivery?

IMPORTANT: If you believe an item may be missing from your delivery, you must notify us within 3 working days

IMPORTANT: If your parcel is damaged or open on recipt, you must sign for the parcel as "received damaged" or "received open" and notify us within 2 working days.

Choosing Your Wetsuit

Choosing Your Wetsuit

Whether abroad or in UK waters if you want to enjoy a prolonged period of activity, in or on the water, wrapping yourself in neoprene is the way forward! When submerged in water the body looses heat 20 times faster than in the air so you don’t have to be a serious water sports enthusiast to feel the need to keep warm.Wetsuits reduce heat loss by putting a layer of insulating foam neoprene over your skin. A wetsuit should form a seal all over the body, with particular emphasis on the torso, a snug and comfortable fit. Water can enter at the neck, wrists, ankles and is trapped between your skin and the suit. Parents, please note, a wetsuit with two years growing room in it will provide little thermal benefit initially but may help with sun protection. Wearing a Rash Vest/Rashie under a wetsuit will provide a smooth surface to aid the donning of a wetsuit, helping to make the suit more comfortable by reducing any rubbing particularly around the neck, and will also provide an extra layer.Choosing the correct size of wetsuit will improve the overall insulating benefits of wearing a wetsuit. You should use the measurements on the size charts provided as a guide to overall fit, taking into consideration the height, chest and waist measurements.Wetsuits come in a variety of options and thicknesses for a variety of water sports activities from just standing knee deep watching the youngsters splash about in the surf, trying a bit of bodyboarding and surfing, to the more serious surfer, competitive triathlete, scuba diver or sailor. Today's neoprene is manufactured to provide optimum warmth with innovative properties to provide freedom of movement previously unobtainable. We sell a variety of wetsuits for multisport use including snorkelling, surfing, diving, swimming, dinghy sailing, snorkelling, kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddling, the have-a-go biathlete or triathlete, in fact the majority of water sports uses. Our wetsuits come from some of the largest manufacturers in the surf, sailing, dive markets including Mares, Cressi, Gul, C-Skins, Waterproof, Fourth Element, Typhoon and Gill. See them all in our Wetsuits Warehouse.

Wetsuit fitting

CHEST
Choosing the correct size of wetsuit is key to ensuring you benefit from the insulating benefits of wearing a wetsuit. You should use the measurements on the size charts provided as a guide to overall fit, taking into consideration the height, chest and waist measurements. To help guide you to choosing the most appropriate wetsuit size, you should firstly take these key measurements: Your Height (normal height measurement, top of head to ankle/heel), Your Chest, Your Waist measurements.  When you have this information you can properly refer to the manufacturers sizing guides. Every wetsuit manufacturer produces their own size range of wetsuits and has their own way of referring to those sizes. Some manufacturers will use numbers to identify sizes eg 1, 2, 3 etc. some will use letters eg M, MT, L, LS, etc.

WAIST
Occasionally a manufacturer producing a large range of wetsuits may also have specific size/measurement guides for certain types/designs of wetsuits within their range.  As a result you may not always be a (L) Large in every design/style/brand of wetsuit. Neoprene stretches in all directions and tends to conform to the body shape. A 3mm neoprene wetsuit will often fit/feel quite different, as the neoprene is more flexible, compared to a much thicker 5mm or 7mm neoprene suit which has less flexibility.

Putting on a wetsuit is not difficult but requires a little patience and technique.  The thicker the neoprene the more awkward/tighter it may seem.  A wetsuit is designed to be a snug fit in order for it to work efficiently.  The below information assumes a back zip wetsuit.

HEIGHT
GETTING INTO YOUR SUIT 1. If you are putting on a full suit wear socks as this will help the suit slip over your feet/ankles. Open up the wetsuit, put one foot in, point the toes, and ease the opening over the foot and heel. The bottom of the leg should be just on or above the ankle. Pull the rest of the leg up over the calf to about the knee. Put the next foot/leg in.

2. The top of the kneepatch on the suit should usually be positioned to lie just above the knee area – the majority of knee protection falling below the knee down to the top of the shin area.  Once the legs are up to the knees, continue working the wetsuit up each leg alternately, use a technique we call pinch ‘n’ pull – with the pads of your finger tips (not leading with your nails).

3. Ease the suit up the thighs and gradually, over the hips and bottom, and gradually up the torso. Try to avoid having a saggy skate boarders crotch.

4. If you have a gathering of neoprene around the lower leg/ankles – this will mean less neoprene for your upper body and may feel like the suit isn’t long enough or too small.  So you must work any excess up the legs, over the hips and potentially into the lower torso, which will provide more flex for the upper body/chest/back and even shoulders.

5. Once your torso is in and the wetsuit is up to your chest, put ONE hand/arm in at a time – this will then keep one hand/arm free to help work the suit up the other arm.  Ease any excess neoprene from around the wrist all the way up the arm and over the shoulder – pinch ‘n’ pull.  Then put the other arm in, making sure you continually work any excess up the arms to cover the shoulder.  Once the arms are in and the shoulders fully covered - You will have the suit on !

6. If you have a gathering of neoprene around the wrists – this will mean less neoprene on your shoulders and may feel like the suit is too small.  So you must work this excess neoprene up the arms and over the shoulders.

7. It is always advisable if someone else is able to zip the suit up for you – with a back zip.

8. DO NOT use the zip to pull the two halves of the suit together if it is not on your shoulders/arms properly.

9. DO NOT pull on the zip if it meets resistance – you may have something caught in it.  The inner flap that sits under the zip should lie flat so that it forms a seal underneath the two halves of the zip – if it doesn’t it may stop the zip.  The zip will ‘run’ more easily if it is as straight as possible – so if possible hold the neck seal together or top of the rear zip while you use the webbing zip puller with the other hand.

10.Finally, work the suit in to a flush fit by using the pinch ‘n’ pull technique to work out any slack and get the suit comfortable.  It should form a ‘seal’ all over the body. Remember also a wetsuit will feel different in the water. Oh, and do remember to take your socks off.

Seam construction

Flatlock Stitched Seams
>Flatlock is created by stitching neoprene together, creating a flat seam. This finish is extremely comfortable and durable but can only be used on neoprene up to 3mm and therefore tends to be used on lighter weight wetsuits.

Blindstitched Seams
Blindstitching is produced by gluing two edges of neoprene together, followed by stitching across the seam, so not piercing the neoprene. Tape may also be added to stress points for extra strength. This is generally considered a warmer finish. Any wetsuit thicker than 3mm can only be constructed with blindtitched seams.

As wetsuit technology has developed there are now virtually ‘stitchless’ suits. Seams can also be double and/or triple sealed using liquid neoprene reducing materials and making suits increasing lighter. Neoprene is also evolving providing lighter wetsuits, which hold/absorb less water which makes a suit less dense when wet and more comfortable as a result. These features are more associated with top-end surfing wetsuits.

Neck Seals/Wrist Seals/Ankle Seals can be finished using a smooth rubber finish eg: glideskin and is designed to help reduce water flushing in these critical areas. This type of finish is virtually always around the neck seal and in the case of semi-dry suits also around the wrists and ankles.

Neoprene thickness

3mm, 3/2mm

The accepted standard neoprene thickness for warmer summer activities or high energy activities requiring a greater degree of flexibility. There is also a degree of industry accepted tolerance for this thickness of neoprene. Neoprene thicknesses of less than 2mm are designed for high energy activities or tropical environments where less thermal protection is required but naturally have a greater degree of flexibility.

5/4/3mm, 5/3mm
The accepted neoprene thicknesses for year round activities, winter activities or activities in cooler waters. These suits can also have a combination of neoprene thicknesses to create greater flexibility, where required arms/shoulders/legs, providing greater freedom of movement for higher energy activities. Thicker neoprene provides greater warmth but less flexibility.

7mm, 7/5mm
The accepted neoprene thicknesses for year round activities, winter activities, activities in colder waters or any watersports activity requiring greater thermal protection although resulting in lesser

Neoprene type

Single lined neoprene/mesh neoprene

Neoprene with nylon lining on one side, usually the inside, to provide a comfortable finish and aid donning of a wetsuit. Also called mesh neoprene. Usually found on chest and back panels providing a warmer finish as the external surface improves water run-off resulting in reduced windchill.

Double lined neoprene

Neoprene with nylon lining on both sides, inside and outside – for protection, durability and warmth. Multisport wetsuits are usually constructed using the majority of double lined neoprene.

Titanium Lined neoprene

Titanium added to the majority of neoprene utilised on the main body panels to enhance thermal properties of neoprene less than 5mm thickness. Most neoprene these days has a degree of titanium lining but ultimately the overall neoprene thickness, seam construction/finish and fit has the greatest influence on the overall warmth of the suit.

CARE FOR YOUR WETSUIT

1. UV RAYS & HEAT

Do not expose your wetsuit to Ultra violet rays for prolonged periods of time. UV rays can break down molecular bonds in the neoprene, resulting in cracks and tears. Never leave your wetsuit to dry in the sun or in a place where it would be exposed to UV rays. Exposure to really hot heat will cause neoprene to lose its elasticity, and to some degree, even its shape.

2.CHEMICALS:

Do not use any chemicals to clean your wetsuit and if you notice or suspect there are any chemicals, oil or gas present avoid the water.
Avoid Chlorine if possible.

3. CLEANING & DRYING

After use in salt water, please rinse your suit in freshwater. Salt and dirt can be detrimental to your suit if not washed away before storage. Wash with a mild temperature using a wetsuit cleaner if necessary. Please pay particular attention to remove any sand or foreign matter from the zips to prolong its lifespan. When drying your wetsuit turn it inside out, this will protect the neoprene from uv radiation and protect the flexibility of your suit. This will also benefit you when you come to wear it again as the inside will be dry making it a lot easier to slip into.

4.WETSUIT STORAGE:

We recommend you dry your wetsuit on a heavy-duty hanger so it will not leave any marks and ridges in your wetsuit. As the wetsuit dries out it tends to take the shape of the hanger so you want the hanger to be fairly beefy probably made out of wood, heavy-duty plastic or a padded hanger. There are several companies that sell specialised wetsuit hangers. Please don't use a metal hanger as this could rust due to the water in the suit. For long-term storage, once the suit is dry, you can lay it out flat in a dry and cool place away from the sun.Try not to store it in your garage or where you may keep your car as exhaust gases can damage neoprene.

5.WETSUIT REPAIRS:

For minor repairs we sell a wetsuit repair kit from Gul and C-Skins each containing neoprene patches and neoprene glue we also sell Blackwitch Neoprene Glue by GearAir (formerly McNett).

Choosing a Lifejacket or Buoyancy Aid

Lifejacket Inflation Methods

MANUAL INFLATION
All Crewsaver Air Only Lifejackets sold by Watersports Warehouse can be Manually inflated, by pulling the lanyard/pull cord. This allows the wearer to swim without the Lifejacket activating automatically. This can be useful if you wade when launching or tending to craft in calm waters.

1. Pull the lanyard.

2. CO2 canister is fired, Lifejacket inflates delivering full buoyancy in approximately 5 seconds

3. Can also be inflated manually and/or orally.

AUTOMATIC INFLATION
This inflation option is available on most Crewsaver Air Only Lifejackets sold by Watersports Warehouse. Inflation occurs automatically when the paper retaining collar dissolves on contact with water.  These lifejackets also have the ability to be manually activated via the lanyard/pull cord.

1. Delivers full buoyancy in approximately 5 seconds of entry into water.

2. Mechanism pierces canister inflating the Lifejacket.

3. Can also be inflated manually and/or orally.

Choosing a Lifejacket or Buoyancy Aid

The type of watersports activity you are about to undertake may determine whether you require a foam buoyancy aid, a foam lifejacket or a Gas Inflation Lifejacket.

A Buoyancy Aid is mainly used for active surface watersports and would bot be recommended for offshore use, particularly when wearing heavy waterproof clothing. "Newtons (N)" refers to the amount of lift provided by the aid/lifejacket. A 50N rated inherent foam buoyancy jacket provides 11lbs/5.5kg of buoyancy. A 100N rated inherent foam buoyancy aid provides 23lbs/11kg of buoyancy.

BUOYANCY AIDS

A Buoyancy Aid is just that, an Aid to Buoyancy. It assumes the wearer can, to a degree, help themselves to either swim back to the shore or swim enough to get themselves back to a boat. It therefore assumes that help is close at hand, that the conscious wearer can swim or is comfortable enough in the water to wait for assistance and for this reason usually worn in sheltered waters.

Parents, please note: It is unlikely that a Buoyancy Aid or Foam Lifejacket with two years (or more) growing room will offer the ideal fit and/or be safe.

LIFEJACKETS

A Lifejacket featuring Auto Inflation mechanism will help when the wearer should enter the water and is unable to help themselves or is unconscious and is almost always the preferred option for sailing coastal waters/offshore. The type of inflation mechanism you choose - Automatic or Manual - is usually determined by the boating/water sport activity, conditions/ environment and the type of clothing worn and usually provide at least 150 Newtons.

Buy an Adult Buoyancy Aid Buy an Adult LifejacketBuy a Junior Buoyancy Aid or Lifejacket

All Buoyancy Aid/Lifejackets we sell carry an EN (European Standard) number. Products newly designed, developed and introduced to market will now carry the CE mark and approved to BSEN 12402. These standards, which also have the status of British Standards, are intended to ensure that all Lifejackets sold in this country meet very stringent requirements regarding the design, performance, materials and components used.

The information within this table is a guide only. The final purchasing decision and liability thereof is left to the individual.

When trying on your Buoyancy Aid for the first time, make sure to loosen and undo all the straps. This will make putting it on very easy. You can then tighten the straps to the desired fit.

A buoyancy aid is designed to fit on your chest to give maximum freedom of movement and when worn would usually rest just on or just above the bottom of the rib cage.
